CUFOS was founded in 1973 by the late Dr. J. Allan Hynek. Hynek first became infamous in ufology for his "swamp gas hypothesis", but later became a celebrated ufologist who made major improvements to sighting classification and analysis. CUFOS encourages public involvement including UFO reporting, creating articles, searching archives, helping to maintain their computer database and assisting with research projects. CUFOS is one of the most established and respected ufology study groups in existence.
